Lucky 13!

SPRING IS ON ITS WAY!  There is nothing better on a cold winter day than to have something to look forward to in spring.  Make sure that the 13th Annual Half-Pint Resale to your April calendar!  (Lucky 13!)  We’re excited to have our fifth sale at the awesome and spacious Madison Curling Club.

Have you been to Half-Pint Resale?  It’s the area’s largest children’s consignment sale, with items for kids ages 0-12,  pregnant mommas, and new parents.   With tens of thousands of items sold in just three days (see the pictures!), local families can put their gently used goods back into the community and some money back in their pockets, and shoppers get great deals, knowing that their dollars are heading right back into the community.   Because of our commitment to the community, we’re a member of Dane Buy Local and hope to introduce you to other great local, independent and community-centered businesses through their wide network.

Community.  It’s a Half-Pint Resale theme!  It’s what buying local is all about.

But it’s also that time of year where we all are thinking about giving back to our communities through our local non-profits. It’s what keeps us going over here at Half-Pint. Our Motto is always DO GOOD.

We’ve been honored to support Kindred Kids through the donation of items post each sale.  Kindred Kids, located in Columbus, WI, is a free resource to families that have children with special needs. Kindred Kids provides a lending library, complete with toys, books, games, and therapy equipment, as well as wheelchairs and communication devices.

The Goodman Community Center is also top on our lists of non-profits we love and personally support.    As they say, “We help children learn to read, be leaders, handle life’s ups and downs, get through school, and see a future full of opportunities. When we help an older adult feel less isolated and more connected to her community in the company of friends, we know the strength of our community. When we see a food pantry customer finally get that job and get back on his feet, and then volunteer or donate, we see the resilience of our community.”   Perhaps you’ve been to their café, used their amazing community space (or shopped the sale in their gym in our earlier years of the sale!)

Read the stories on this page (I dare you not to get tears in your eyes…)  They even have opportunities to give to youth in their programs or directly TO their youth programs through donations of specific gifts through their Holiday Gift Giving Program (ModPodge or Acrylic paints anyone?)  Stop in and follow the snowflake trail!

We also love Middleton Outreach Ministry (MOM), serving the West Madison, Middleton and Cross Plains areas.  They have a wonderful program during the holiday season called “Sharing Christmas.  Through this program, you can be matched with a  family and receive their holiday wish list, so you can shop for gifts that they might not otherwise receive.  Read this personal story written by a Half-Pint volunteer who participated in the program last year and how it changed her life.

You can see the other non-profits that we’ve been proud to support here, including Mikayla’s Grace, the Rape Crisis Center, Community Justice Inc., and Mother and Child Resources.

We also asked our volunteer coordinators to share one of their favorite local Non-Profits:

HEIDI

Angel’s Wish in Verona.  It’s a no kill pet rescue that stops at nothing to find loving homes for mostly cats, but also dogs.  They are amazing and tireless in their efforts to help animals and match them with wonderful families.

SUSAN

Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS) is near and dear to my heart. They provide much needed support, advocacy and safety to women, children and men.  Currently they are raising funds to build a much-needed facility do they can provide more emergency shelter and better individual and group support opportunities.

My newest favorite charity is the Lussier Community Education Center. This 30 year old west side community center is steeped in grassroots community organizing as it provides after-school care for all ages, employment resources and support for adults, meals and companionship for seniors and much needed emergency food for families.  Their welcoming and open facility offers a great place for community members to come together.

So, now it’s your turn.

So, Half-Pinters, what are your favorite non-profits in the area?   Comment on our blog or on our facebook page – Tell us who they are, and why you support them, and we’ll pick one person’s charity at random and give the non-profit a $100 donation before years end.

Deadline:  Monday, December 10

We thank you for being a part of this amazing community!

Shop Independent and Local – and Win!

I know at Half-Pint we talk a lot about saving money – we are constantly on the look out for a thrifty buy or a good deal.  But of the many reasons buying thrifty is important to us?  It allows us to save enough money to buy other high quality items new.

To us, Just as important as buying green is buying independent and local.

Each time money is spent at a locally-owned business, the taxes stay in your community, and support needed resources such as schools, parks…and much more.  Local businesses employ local people.  Money spent at these stores and businesses supports your neighbors and friends who own them and are employed by them.

We know, we know – it’s hard to pass up all of the good deals on Black Friday, and we’re not admonishing you for shopping.  But what we’re hoping is that with all of the money you’ve saved being thrifty over the year, you can spend some this holiday season at a local and independent business.  It will be just as good for the community.

Do you know about Small Business Saturday?  You may have seen it advertised:  the idea is – specifically on Saturday of this week, go check-out some great small, independent stores in your community and find a few things for someone special on your list.

So we need your help.

You live all of our community, and you have favorite independent, local stores.   We’d love to have a “half-pint” list of favorite local, independent stores.  And this is where you come in!

Share with the Half-Pint community your favorite independent, local stores.   Comment on our blog or respond to our facebook post with the following information, and we will pick one person to win a $100 gift certificate to the store in their comment/post.

Name of Store and website (if they have one), the general location

Why you love it!   What kinds of stuff do you buy there, and for who?

Some small print – 1) if your store doesn’t offer gift cards, we’ll offer the ‘reward’ through a American Express or VISA Gift Card, 2) only independent, local stores are eligible!, 3) You can reply as often as you like, but one ‘entry’ per person.

Deadline:  Monday, November 26th, 11:59pm

To get you started, here are some of our favorites:

LISA

1 –  Fromagination (located on the Capitol Square) – I can put together treat baskets for friends and coworkers that are artisan as well as local.  Wisconsin cheeses, Madison’s own Quince and Apple preserves, some Gail Ambrosius chocolates, and Potter’s Crackers.  Yum.

2 – Iconi Interiors (West Washington, downtown Madison) – It’s an awesome mixture of new and upcycled mid-century modern home decor.  It’s full of treasures, most of which I can’t seem to do without whenever I’m in the store.

ELLEN

1 – Absolutely Art (Atwood Ave)– When I need a gift, I always head there first.  From practical to whimsical, I love buying things that are handmade from a business that is so involved in the community, including supporting our local schools.

2 – La Lingerie Shop (Johnson Street, near east side of Madison) – This gem of a store is someplace you might not consider going- after all, do you need a specialty bra?  The answer is yes, yes you do.  Her amazing fitting tips are invaluable AND she has CHOICES of beautiful bras for every size.  And she has nursing bras!  Make the appointment!  Get the foundation layer right, so everything else can look great!

3 – Happy Bambino (Monona Dr) – I would hope you all know about HB.  What you may not know is how much of their lives the folks who own that place have given up in order to give such a valuable resource to the community.  Their carefully curated selection of goods and their commitment to the community should make this top on your list of places to go for baby needs.

SUSAN

(fabulous Volunteer Co-Coordinator Extra-ordinaire)

1 – Playthings (in Hilldale mall).  They carry unique and creative toys, games and gadgets. It’s a fun and colorful store with good knowledgable staff. It’s great for birthday presents that I know will be well loved and reliable and different. They also carry some beautiful clothing for babies and toddlers

2 – Change (On Williamson St) – It’s a new women’s clothing and accessories store owned and operated by a local mom. She buys only fair trade and offers beautiful items that are good quality and wearable. The store is bright and easy to shop!  Check out this recent review in Madison Magazine.
